Search and answer engines

Cited, not just ranked

Technical SEO and generative engine optimisation: the work that decides whether an answer engine names you or paraphrases you without attribution.

In short

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so that AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews cite it. It overlaps with SEO but rewards different things: factual density, definitional openings, explicit sourcing, and structured data over raw backlink volume. Rynexor does both, and measures AI referral traffic separately so the difference is visible.

One page, two retrieval paths A single published page branches into two routes. The search route: crawl, index, rank, then a click if the ranking is high enough. The answer-engine route: retrieve a passage rather than a page, extract from it (where the opening sentences carry disproportionate weight), attribute the source or paraphrase it without naming anyone, and produce a referral only where attribution survived. Your page published once SEARCH Crawl reachable, indexable Index stored, deduplicated Rank a position in a list Click a visit, if you are high enough ANSWER ENGINE Retrieve passage, not page Extract the opening carries the weight Attribute named, or paraphrased silently Referral only if attribution survived
The work that decides the lower path is different from the work that decides the upper one. Most of it happens in the first hundred words.

What this covers

4 areas

01

Technical foundation

Crawlability, index control, Core Web Vitals, canonicalisation, and the redirect debt that accumulates through every site rebuild. Unglamorous and load-bearing.

02

Entity and schema architecture

Organisation, service, article, and author entities linked by stable identifiers so a machine resolves your brand to one thing. Author nodes carry credentials, which is what lets a model weigh the expertise behind a claim.

03

Content built to be quoted

Definitional openings, answerable questions, statistics with sources a reader can open, and a freshness cycle. Citation priority decays without one.

04

AI visibility measurement

Referral traffic from answer engines reported separately from organic search, plus prompt-level tracking of whether you appear for the questions that matter. Without this, GEO is an opinion.

How it runs

Stages, in order. Each one produces something you keep.

  1. Stage 01

    Technical audit

Crawl, index coverage, performance, and structured data. Fixing the foundation first, because content strategy on a broken site is expensive decoration.

  2. Stage 02

    Entity architecture

One canonical identity across the site, linked consistently so search and answer engines stop treating each page as a separate business.

  3. Stage 03

    Content structure

Existing pages restructured to answer-first, new pages built that way from the start.

  4. Stage 04

    Authority

Digital PR and citation building aimed at sources that answer engines actually draw from, which is a shorter list than the one link brokers sell.

  5. Stage 05

    Measure and refresh

AI referrals and rankings tracked separately, with a scheduled refresh cycle on the pages that earn citations.

Questions we get asked

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

They overlap heavily and share a technical foundation, but they reward different things. Search ranks pages; answer engines extract passages. That favours content with clear definitional openings, verifiable statistics, and explicit structure, and it makes freshness matter more, because citation priority decays without updates.

Do we need an llms.txt file?

It costs nothing, so we ship one. Adoption sits around 10% of sites, and the major AI crawlers do not request it in meaningful volume; they read your HTML. Anyone selling llms.txt as the centre of a GEO strategy is selling you the cheap part.

How long before this shows results?

Technical fixes can move things within weeks. Content and authority work runs on a three to six month horizon. New content tends to enter AI citation pools within days of being indexed, which is faster than classic SEO, but being eligible to be cited and being cited are different things.

Can you guarantee we appear in AI answers?

No, and neither can anyone else. Answer engines do not publish their selection criteria and change them without notice. What we can do is make the site eligible on every factor that is known to matter, and measure whether it works.
